An Igneous Rock of Quartz, Feldspar and Mica, and Why That Matters on a Counter

Granite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock. It cooled slowly and deep, which is why the crystals are large enough to read with the naked eye. The mix is mostly quartz, alkali feldspar, mica and plagioclase, with quartz running 20 to 60 percent by volume depending on the deposit.

That composition is the whole story on a counter. Quartz supplies hardness. Feldspar supplies most of the color and the crystalline flash you catch when afternoon light rakes across a polished top. Mica supplies the dark flecks. Density sits between 2.65 and 2.75 grams per cubic centimeter, which is the practical reason a three centimeter slab needs a suction rig and a real crew rather than two people and good intentions.

Movement, Lot Variation and Why Two Slabs Never Match

Slabs are gang-sawn sequentially out of a quarried block. Two cut side by side can be book-matched so the veining mirrors across a seam. Move six slabs deeper into the same block and the pattern has drifted. Move to a different block, cut a different year, and it can drift a great deal.

Tag the Actual Slabs Before Fabrication

A four inch sample chip cannot show what a nine foot slab does. We send clients to the yard to tag the specific pieces that become their kitchen, pull multi-slab jobs from one bundle, and lay out every seam digitally before a saw touches anything.

Compressive Strength Above 29,000 PSI Explains the Chip Resistance

Granite’s compressive strength is usually above 200 MPa, roughly 29,000 psi. That is the crushing load the stone body takes, and it is the number behind a surface that survives a dropped cast iron skillet with nothing worse than a scuffed pot.

Compressive strength is not edge toughness, and that distinction is where honest fabrication lives. A sharp corner on an unsupported overhang is the weak point on any stone counter, so we ease exposed corners, support long overhangs with steel or corbels, and rod the cooktop cutout. The failures we repair almost never start mid-slab.

Secondary Permeability: Sealing Granite Against the Fissures, Not the Body

Granite has poor primary permeability. The interlocked crystals leave very little connected pore space, so the rock body itself does not readily pass fluid. What granite has is strong secondary permeability, meaning liquid travels through cracks, fissures and grain boundaries. When someone says granite is porous, that is what is actually happening.

An impregnating sealer is not a varnish sitting on top. It loads that fissure network with an oleophobic resin so oil and pigment cannot wick down. Modern impregnators have pushed the interval to once every five to ten years, a long way from the annual ritual people still repeat from the 1990s.

The Water Test Beats the Calendar

Granite Around Gas Ranges and Cast Iron Cookware

Granite tolerates heat better than engineered stone because there is no polyester binder to soften. Its melting range is 1,215 to 1,260 degrees Celsius. Above roughly 1,000 degrees it micro-fractures, porosity climbs and strength drops, which matters in a house fire and not at all next to a gas burner.

We still hand out trivets, and the reason is thermal gradient rather than the stone body. A seam, a cutout corner or an existing fissure concentrates that stress, and repeated cycles are a bad bet on any brittle material.

Where Granite Is the Wrong Choice

If you want a large white kitchen with no visible variation, granite will fight you. Pattern shifts between slabs, and pits and fissures are features of the rock, not defects a fabricator can remove. Buyers who need photographic uniformity should look at {{LINK:material:quartz}}, where color is engineered and repeatable. Granite will also never imitate the soft grey vein of Italian marble, and a busy granite in a small galley kitchen usually shrinks the room. We say that at the estimate rather than after installation.

Level Tiers From Builder Grade to Exotic

Yards sort granite into levels, and the sorting has almost nothing to do with durability. A level one stone from a high-yield quarry can be harder than an exotic. What moves a slab up the tiers is rarity, block yield, drama of the movement and how far it traveled. Choose on behavior and how it reads in your room, not on the sticker. Granite Countertop Questions From Austin Homeowners

Does granite stain?

It can, though only engineered quartz resists staining better. Oil wicks into the fissure network rather than the rock body, so a sealed slab gives you a long window to wipe up. Overnight olive oil, wine and turmeric are the real offenders, and most lift with a poultice.

How often does granite need sealing?

Modern oleophobic impregnators stretch the interval to roughly once every five to ten years. Denser slabs go longer, and the sink and cooktop zones wear first. Skip the calendar: fifteen minutes of standing water that darkens the stone means reseal that area.

Are granite fissures cracks?

No. A fissure is a natural separation along a mineral boundary formed as the rock cooled, present through the slab as a feature. A crack is a fresh break with displacement, usually at a cutout corner or unsupported overhang. We point fissures out at slab tagging.

Can I set a hot pan on granite?

Better than anything else on our board, with no resin binder and a melting range above 1,200 degrees Celsius. We still hand out trivets. Repeated sharp thermal gradients near a seam, a cutout corner or an existing fissure concentrate stress on a brittle material.

Is granite still in style?

Granite never left, it just stopped being the default. The speckled gold and brown tops of the early 2000s dated themselves, but the yards now carry quiet greys, leathered blacks and dramatic movement that read as contemporary in modern Austin kitchens.

Does granite chip easily at the edges?
