Austin Custom Countertops is a fabrication shop first and an installer second, which is the order that matters. Every countertop we sell is templated off your own cabinets, cut on our own CNC in Austin and set by the same crew that measured it. That is true whether the job is a single bathroom vanity in Rollingwood, a full kitchen in West Lake Hills or a stone package for a new build in Steiner Ranch. Granite is still the workhorse of Austin kitchens, and for good reason. It is an igneous stone with no resin in it, so it takes a hot pan straight off the burner and it does not fade in the sun that pours through a west-facing window or onto a covered patio. Our granite countertop installation starts at the slab yard: you choose the actual slab, we photograph it and lay your template over it so you see where every seam and every vein will fall before anything is cut. In the shop we cut, edge and polish the stone, make the undermount sink and cooktop openings, and apply a penetrating sealer. On install day we remove the old tops, level the cabinets, set and seam the granite and reconnect the sink. Granite suits cooks who use cast iron, families who want a forgiving surface and every outdoor kitchen in Travis County.
Engineered quartz is the low-maintenance choice: crushed quartz bound in resin, non-porous, never sealed and the most stain resistant surface we install. Coffee, wine and turmeric wipe off. Because quartz is made rather than quarried, the slab you approve in the showroom is the slab that arrives, which is why it is the default for busy family kitchens, rental properties and long runs of matching vanities. Our quartz countertop work covers kitchens, islands, bathrooms, laundry rooms and bars, with seams placed against the pattern rather than across it and edges profiled in the shop. Two honest limits: quartz does not like a hot pan set straight down, and it does not belong outdoors in direct sun. Indoors, with a trivet by the range, it is the easiest countertop to live with.
Marble and fabrication
Marble is the stone people fall in love with, and the one that most needs a straight conversation. It is calcite, softer than granite, and acids such as lemon juice, wine and some cleaners leave dull etch marks. We explain all of that before you buy, help you choose between polished and honed finishes (honed hides etching far better) and seal the stone properly. Fabrication is the part of the job you never see and the part that decides how the finished kitchen looks. Our custom countertop fabrication happens in our own Austin shop: digital templates taken off your cabinets, a CNC that cuts sink, cooktop and faucet openings to the millimetre, mitred and laminated edges that make a thin slab look substantial, waterfall ends assembled so the veining runs unbroken over the corner, and integrated drainboards routed into the stone. Because we do not hand the cutting to a third party, the person who templated your kitchen can walk over to the saw and check the piece before it leaves the building.

The materials
Manufactured, not quarried. Crushed silica makes up 90 to 93 percent of a slab by weight, bound in 7 to 10 percent polyester resin and pressed under vacuum while the mold vibrates. The result has virtually no porosity, so nothing soaks in and no sealer is ever needed. It is the most stain resistant of the common household surfaces, granite second. Its two honest limits are heat, since the binder degrades above about 150 C, and sunlight, since polyester resin is not fully UV stable.
Igneous rock, crystallized slowly from silica rich magma into an interlocking matrix of quartz, alkali feldspar, mica and plagioclase. It runs 2.65 to 2.75 grams per cubic centimetre, with compressive strength usually above 200 megapascals. No resin anywhere in it, so neither heat nor sun is the problem it is for quartz. What it does have is a real pore structure, which is why natural stone takes an impregnating sealer every few years.
Sandstone buried, heated and squeezed until its grains recrystallized into one continuous mass. A metamorphic quartzite carries at least 80 percent quartz by volume. The tell is how it breaks: sandstone parts around its grains, because the cement between them is the weak point, while quartzite fractures straight through them. Quartz sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than a steel blade. The catch is the label: much of what is sold under this name is dolomitic marble borrowing it, so we test a slab before we cut it.
Limestone or dolostone recrystallized under heat and pressure, so it is calcium carbonate, and calcium carbonate reacts with acid. Lemon juice, wine and vinegar dissolve a shallow layer and leave a dull spot. That is etching, a different failure from a stain: nothing sits on the surface, a little of the surface has gone. Marble is soft and porous as well, so it scratches and takes up coloured liquids. None of that rules it out: marble suits somebody who wants the stone to record the life of the room rather than resist it.
From slab to install
A countertop is three separate trades, and most companies split them between three businesses. Here they are one.
The old surface comes out first. Pulling laminate is quick, while breaking a bonded tile or stone top off the cabinets without wrecking the boxes underneath is slow and deliberate.
Then we laser template off the cabinets you actually have rather than off a plan. Rooms are rarely square: a wall runs out, a corner opens a degree or two. A template taken in the room carries all of that into the file. This visit is also where the layout gets agreed: where the seams land, which way the veining runs across an island, how far the overhang reaches.
Cutting happens on the CNC in our Austin shop, wet, with water carrying the heat and the dust away. Edge profiles are routed from the same program, which is why the profile at the far corner matches the one beside the sink. Cutting engineered stone dry throws respirable silica into the air, and the control for that is water fed tooling and extraction rather than a paper mask.
Install is our own crew. They set the tops, pull the seams together with colour matched epoxy, support the overhangs and reconnect the plumbing, under one written price.
What it costs
We do not publish a rate per square foot. A rate printed on a website is a guess about a kitchen nobody has measured. What we can do is name the things that move the number on the written price we hand you, so none of it is a surprise at the end.
Square footage sets the floor and is the least interesting part. Material grade moves it harder: quartz is sold in tiers, granite and quartzite come out of finite quarries, and an unusually clean block is priced by scarcity.
Slab movement is the factor almost nobody expects. A stone with strong directional veining has to be laid out so the pattern runs the right way and meets at a seam, which can mean buying more material than the raw square footage suggests, because the usable area of a slab shrinks once the pattern has to line up.
The rest is mostly labour. An edge profile is machine passes and hand polishing, and a built up edge means laminating a strip of stone underneath and polishing the joint invisible. Cutouts each add an operation, and an undermount sink needs its cut edge finished. Seams are a cost and a design decision at once, since fewer of them can mean buying a larger slab. Removing what is there now is real work with real disposal behind it, and plumbing reconnection is the quiet one: a shutoff valve that will not close becomes a line item in any house.
Cut in Austin
Austin straddles the Balcones Fault, with the karst limestone of the Texas Hill Country to the west and the Blackland Prairie to the east, and it has been one of the fastest growing large cities in the country since 2010. Two things follow for anyone buying a countertop here.
The first is the weather, which is a material constraint rather than a talking point. An average year reaches 90 F on 123 days and 100 F on 29 of them, the record stands at 112 F, and the city collects about 2,650 hours of bright sunshine a year. Polyester resin is not fully UV stable, so engineered quartz does not belong outdoors in this climate, and a covered patio taking late sun sideways still counts as outdoors. Granite and porcelain go outside. Quartz stays in the kitchen.
The second is distance. A slab is heavy, brittle and easiest to break in transit, and every handling step between the saw and your cabinets is another chance to chip a corner. Cutting here means the stone travels once, and a remake is a slot in our own queue.
Hill Country water
Travis County is split by the Balcones Fault, and its western half is Hill Country karst limestone. Water percolating through limestone picks up calcium and magnesium carbonates, which is the definition of hard water, and hard water leaves limescale: a chalky deposit of calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide that forms wherever a drop dries.
In a kitchen that shows up as a ring at the base of the faucet, a film that catches the light on dark polished stone, and soap scum at the sink instead of lather, since those ions strip soap of its surfactant properties. On engineered quartz and on granite it is cosmetic and lifts with warm water and a soft cloth.
On marble, and on the dolomitic stones sold as quartzite, it is a trap. The usual shortcut for limescale is an acidic descaler, and acid is exactly what dissolves calcium carbonate. The deposit comes away and takes the polish with it, leaving a dull patch shaped like whatever was cleaned. So the question at an estimate is not only which stone you like, but who cleans this kitchen and what they reach for.
Who we work for
Travis County covers about 1,023 square miles and holds close to 1.4 million people, and the countertop work inside it is not one kind of job.
Homeowners are the bulk of it: a kitchen where the laminate has finally lost, a bathroom where the moulded cultured marble top and basin are a single unit and both have to go. Builders and remodellers are the other half of the residential side, and what they need is a template date that holds and a set date that holds, because countertops sit late in a schedule with the backsplash and the appliances queued behind them.
Commercial work is its own discipline rather than a larger kitchen. A break room, a clinic reception desk, a restaurant service counter and a multi unit apartment package each need submittals approved before a saw runs, and often a phased set so one floor at a time returns to service.

Usually, though the honest answer depends on the slab. The work runs in two visits, a template appointment and an install day, with shop time between them. If the stone is in stock locally the gap is short. If it has to be brought in, the lead time on the material sets your date rather than our schedule.
Often yes, and worth asking before you buy new ones. We template around the fixtures you intend to keep, so bring us the actual sink or its specification sheet: a basin that is nominally the same size can differ enough at the rim to change the cutout. An undermount sink has to be on site before the stone is cut.
All of them. A vanity top is not simply a small kitchen counter, since the faucet spread, the basin type and the splash detail against an out of square wall drive that job instead of seams and overhangs. Outdoor counters here are granite or porcelain only, never engineered quartz, for the ultraviolet reason above.
