This is the part you are actually buying, so here it is in order, written as what we do rather than a how-to. The slab itself was cut, edged and finished at the shop beforehand; Countertop Fabrication owns that half of the story and we will not re-tell it here. Install day is about your kitchen, your cabinets and your plumbing, and it runs in five moves.
Clearing the Run and Protecting the Path In
Before the truck arrives, cabinets under the run are emptied and anything on the old top comes off. We pull appliances where needed, lay floor and door protection along the carry path, and confirm which door the slab comes in through, because a 78745 galley house and a wide new build load very differently. Three minutes of planning saves a wall.
Dry Fit, Level and Shim Before Anything Is Bonded
Every piece is set dry first. We check the run across its full length and shim the cabinets to a true plane before any adhesive opens, because a quartz top telegraphs a cabinet that is out of level and no amount of caulk hides it later. Where a cutout or an unsupported span needs help, support goes in now, under the stone, where it belongs.
Bonding the Seam and Colour Matching It
Where a joint has to land, we draw the two edges together and bond them with adhesive tinted to the slab. Here quartz gives us an advantage natural stone cannot: engineered stone has a uniform internal structure and colour and pattern consistency from slab to slab, so a well-placed quartz seam can be made to nearly disappear in a way a heavily veined granite seam never will. We place it deliberately and finish it flush.
Setting the Sink and Finishing the Cutout Edge
With an undermount sink, the edge of the countertop is exposed at the opening, so it has to be a carefully finished edge rather than a rough cut, work done back at the fabricator, and the sink is mounted from below with silicone-based sealant making the waterproof joint. A self-rimming sink drops into a templated hole and hangs by its rim on a bead of sealant. We describe both as trade practice rather than a published standard, and for most Austin kitchens we recommend the undermount: it wipes clean with nothing to catch crumbs, and quartz carries the polished opening beautifully.
Faucet Bores, Backsplash and the Plumber Hand-Off
Faucet, soap dispenser and air gap bores are drilled to your fixture list. An applied or integrated backsplash goes on where specified, doing the quiet job a backsplash does, keeping spills and objects from falling behind the cabinets. Then the honest sequencing point that keeps a remodel moving: we set the top, your plumber reconnects supply and drains after us, and the tile setter follows the plumber. Everyone knows who does what, so nobody is waiting on nobody.
Slab Format Limits and Where Your Seams Have to Land
If you have a long island, this is the most useful heading on the page. The most common quartz slab format is 3040 mm by 1440 mm, with 3040 by 1650 mm produced according to market demand. A run longer than one slab therefore gets a seam, and the only real question is where it lands. The candidates: at the sink, where the cutout swallows most of the joint; at a cooktop, for the same reason; at a corner, where the eye expects a line; or in the least-lit stretch of the run. We choose it with you on the template drawing, not on the day.
The geometry around the seam is standard and worth knowing. A countertop on standard US wall-mounted base cabinets typically runs about 25 to 26 inches front to back with a slight front overhang, and finished height from the floor is typically 35 to 36 inches. Those numbers, with your kitchen's exact walls, are what the digital template captures.
12, 20 or 30 mm: Choosing Quartz Thickness and Edge Build-Up
Engineered quartz is produced in 12 mm, 20 mm or 30 mm thicknesses, and countertop offerings commonly run from 6 mm through 1.2 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm and 4 cm, though that longer list comes from thinly sourced trade literature, so treat it as what the market commonly offers rather than a specification. The decision that matters is simpler. A thinner slab with a built-up or mitred edge can read as a heavy top at lower material weight, which suits a floating look or a long overhang. A full-thickness slab carries its mass honestly and hides nothing at the corner, because every build-up puts a fine joint line at the edge that a sharp eye can find. Indoors Only: Why We Will Not Set Quartz on Your Patio
Short and absolute. The polyester resins that bind engineered stone are not completely UV stable, and engineered stone should not be used in outdoor applications; continuous UV exposure causes discoloration of the stone and breakdown of the resin binder. There is no sealed, shaded or premium version of the material that escapes this, so we decline the job rather than set a top that will fail. The Two Rules We Hand You With the Warranty
Quartz after-care is short, which is most of why people buy it. Rule one is heat. Quartz engineered stone is less heat resistant than other stone surfaces including most granite, marble and limestone. It is not affected by temperatures lower than 150 degrees C, which is 300 degrees F, but it can be damaged by sudden temperature changes, and manufacturers say hot pots and pans never go straight onto the surface, with a hot pad or trivet under portable cooking units. So the trivet is not optional; it is the warranty staying alive.
Rule two is sealing, and it is good news. Quartz surfaces are less porous than natural stone and do not need to be sealed the way other stone surfaces do. From Template Appointment to a Working Kitchen
We promise stages, not dates, because dates promised before the template are fiction. The stages run: digital template once your cabinets are final, slab and colour confirmation, shop time, set day, then your plumber's reconnect. One honest detail from the production side: cured engineered material is normally kept 24 to 48 hours before polishing and finishing, so even a rush order has a floor under it.
Three things stretch a schedule, and none of them is mysterious: a colour that has to come in from out of market, a cooktop or sink that has not arrived, and a cabinet run that needs correcting before stone can sit on it. Solve those early and the rest moves quickly.
Dust Control When We Cut in Your Home
Most cutting happens at the shop, but install day sometimes needs a trim, and how a crew handles that in your house is worth asking about before you hire anyone. Cutting or processing engineered stone made with quartz produces silica dust, and silicosis can result from breathing it. The scale is documented, not hypothetical: in California, 500 workers at quartz countertop fabrication shops had been diagnosed with silicosis as of January 2026, and inspections in 2019 and 2020 found 72 percent of those shops out of compliance with federal silica dust exposure standards.
That is a shop-worker hazard first, and it is why our on-site trimming is wet-cut with extraction rather than dry-cut in your kitchen. Hire whoever you like, but ask them this question and watch how fast they answer.

Yes, please empty the base cabinets under the run and clear the old countertop before we arrive. We handle floor and door protection, appliance pulls where needed, and the carry path. Emptying ahead of time keeps your dishes safe and usually saves the crew close to an hour on set day.
Will my kitchen be usable the same evening you set the countertops?
Mostly. The tops are set, bonded and finished the same day, and you can use the surfaces that evening. The sink and cooktop wait for your plumber's reconnect, which we sequence for the following visit. We tell you exactly what to avoid touching and for how long before we leave.

Usually, yes. Sound cabinet boxes carry quartz well once we shim the run to a true plane, and we check that at the template appointment. What we will not do is bond stone to a failing or badly out-of-level run, because a quartz top shows every fault in what carries it.
Will you take away and dispose of my old countertops?
Yes. Tear out and haul away are line items on the written estimate, and the crew that sets the new top removes the old one the same morning. Laminate, tile and stone all leave with us, and the cabinets underneath are inspected and shimmed before the new quartz goes on.
Does a quartz countertop ever need to be sealed after installation?
