Self-Rimming Sinks and When They Are the Smarter Choice
A drop-in sink, sometimes called self-rimming, hangs from its own rim. The opening is cut, the basin is lowered in from above, and the rim carries the weight while covering the raw edge of the cut. It is the oldest mounting method still in wide use, and there is a reason it refuses to disappear.
It is the right call more often than trend articles admit. On a laminate top it is effectively the only safe option, because an undermount opening exposes the particleboard core to water. On a rental unit, a garage prep sink or a laundry room, the rim is a feature rather than a compromise. And when a sink has to be swapped without touching the countertop, a drop-in comes out and goes back in the same afternoon.

Cutout Templating From the Sink Manufacturer’s Spec Sheet
Every sink ships with a cutout dimension, and it is never the same as the outside dimension of the rim. Cut to the rim and the sink falls through. Cut too tight and the basin will not seat. We work from the printed spec sheet, then verify against the physical sink whenever it is on site, because production tolerances drift.
On stone the opening is cut with a diamond blade and a router, wet, with the corners radiused rather than squared. On laminate the cut is made with a jigsaw following a scribed line, and the exposed core along the cut gets sealed before the sink goes near it. Either way the line is drawn from the template, not eyeballed against the sink sitting on the counter.

Rim Sealing That Stops Water Tracking Under the Lip
The rim is where drop-in installs succeed or slowly fail. Water finds any gap between the underside of the lip and the counter surface, wicks in by capillary action, and on a wood-core top it does its damage where nobody can see it. On stone it is less destructive but it still grows a dark line around the sink.
The fix is unglamorous and it works. The deck is cleaned to bare, dry material. A continuous bead of silicone goes under the entire rim with no skips at the corners. The sink is set, clipped down where clips are provided, and the squeeze-out is tooled off cleanly rather than smeared. Then it is left alone to cure before the faucet lines go on.

Swapping a Drop-In for an Undermount Later On
This is the question we get most often, and the answer is usually not on the same countertop. The existing hole was cut oversized on purpose so the rim would hide it, and the cut edge was never finished because nothing was ever going to see it. Both facts make a straight conversion impossible.
What can be done is a new top for that run, which is the moment most people also fix the layout, the edge profile and the seam positions they never liked. Cast Iron, Stainless and Composite Weights and Deck Support
Basin material changes the install more than the finish does. Enameled cast iron is by far the heaviest, and while the rim technically carries it, a long unsupported span of laminate or a thin slab section under a full sink deserves a rail or a ledger underneath. We add it as a matter of course rather than waiting to find out.
Stainless is light and easy, though thin gauge basins ring and drum, so sound pads and undercoating earn their keep. Composite granite basins sit in between, tough and quiet, with wide rims that eat into the usable opening and therefore need honest templating. On slab tops we cut all of it wet, which is standard dust control practice for respirable silica in the shop.

Faucet Holes, Soap Dispensers and Air Gap Placement
Deck holes are decided at templating, not on install day. A single hole faucet, a three hole spread, a side sprayer, a soap dispenser, a filtered water tap and a dishwasher air gap all compete for the same narrow strip of deck behind the basin, and once a hole is drilled in stone it does not move.

Is a drop-in sink cheaper to install than an undermount?
Drop-in installs involve less finishing work, since the cut edge stays hidden and no support cradle is usually required. What that means for your job depends on the material, the basin and the deck holes. Will the rim collect grime?
The rim does create a line to wipe around, and a poorly sealed one darkens over time. A continuous silicone bead tooled properly under the entire lip stops water and debris getting under it, which is what actually causes the staining people complain about. Keep the bead intact and a drop-in rim stays clean with a normal wipe.
How many faucet holes should I order?
Count the fixtures first. A single lever faucet needs one, a widespread set needs three, then add one each for a sprayer, a soap dispenser, a filtered tap and a dishwasher air gap if your setup calls for one. Can a drop-in sink go into a stone countertop?
