The Water Drop Test That Tells You If You Need Sealing
Most homeowners seal on a rumor. Someone said every year, so they buy a bottle every year, whether the stone needs it or not. There is a simpler and far more reliable method, and it takes four minutes with nothing but tap water.
Pour a small puddle of water on the counter, roughly the size of a coin, in the area that gets the hardest use. Watch it. If the stone under the water darkens within a couple of minutes, the sealer has worn through and the surface is absorbing. If the puddle beads and the stone stays the same color after fifteen minutes, the sealer is doing its job and you can leave it alone.
Impregnating Versus Topical Sealers
Two entirely different products get sold under the same word, and confusing them is behind most of the sealing problems we are called out to fix.
An impregnating sealer penetrates below the surface and lines the pore structure, leaving the stone looking exactly as it did before. Modern oleophobic impregnators repel both water and oil, and they have stretched sealing intervals on well maintained stone from an annual chore to something closer to every five to ten years. Nothing sits on top, so nothing can peel, cloud or scratch.
A topical sealer forms a film on the surface instead. It can add gloss, and it works on some materials, but the film wears in traffic patterns, scratches show in it rather than in the stone, and acidic or bleach based cleaners strip it unevenly. That is what a milky, blotchy countertop usually is. We use impregnators on natural stone as a matter of policy.
Sealing Schedules by Material Porosity
Porosity is the whole story. {{LINK:material:granite}} has poor primary permeability, meaning the rock body itself barely absorbs, but strong secondary permeability through cracks and fissures. That is exactly what a sealer addresses, and it is why one granite can need sealing twice as often as another from the same yard.

{{LINK:material:quartzite}} is dense, being metamorphosed sandstone that is at least eighty percent quartz by volume with interlocking crystals. Worth knowing: a good deal of material sold as quartzite is actually dolomite or dolomitic marble, and those behave differently. We test rather than trust the label. {{LINK:material:limestone}} and {{LINK:material:travertine}} sit at the porous end and reward a diligent schedule.
Prep Matters More Than Product: Cleaning and Drying Before Sealing
Sealing a dirty countertop locks the dirt in. That sounds obvious, and it is still the single most common mistake in do-it-yourself sealing, because the bottle instructions treat cleaning as a footnote.
Our process starts with a full strip. Old topical residue, soap film, cooking oil and cleaner buildup all come off first, using a pH neutral stone cleaner or a dedicated stripper where a film is present. Then the surface has to dry completely, and completely means longer than it looks. Stone that feels dry at the surface can still hold moisture in the pore structure, and an impregnator applied over trapped moisture cannot penetrate properly.
Polishing Compounds Safe for Your Surface
Polishing and sealing are different operations that often happen in the same visit. Sealing protects. Polishing restores optical sheen by refining the surface, and the compound has to suit the stone.
Calcareous stone such as {{LINK:material:marble}} has a Mohs hardness around three and reacts with acid, so it takes specific fine compounds and a light touch. Siliceous stone such as granite or quartzite sits far harder, near seven, and takes a more aggressive powder. Using a marble compound on granite accomplishes nothing. Using a granite approach on marble does damage.
{{LINK:material:soapstone}} is different again. It is chemically inert and never needs sealing at all, since the darkening people associate with soapstone care comes from mineral oil, which is purely cosmetic. Engineered quartz needs neither sealing nor traditional polishing, and aggressive compounds can haze the resin binder rather than refine it.
Cleaners That Undo the Work
Vinegar, lemon, bleach sprays, tub and tile cleaners and most generic all purpose sprays are acidic or alkaline enough to strip a sealer and etch calcareous stone. A pH neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth handle daily use. Abrasive powders and scouring pads scratch the polish, which then has to be refined back out under {{LINK:service:countertop-refinishing-and-resurfacing}}.

Quartz needs a pH neutral cleaner and protection from heat, since sudden temperature change damages the resin binder holding it together.
How often should granite be sealed?
Less often than folklore suggests. Modern oleophobic impregnators have stretched the interval on well maintained granite to somewhere between five and ten years. The variable is the individual stone, because granite absorbs through fissures rather than through the rock body, and fissure content differs slab to slab. Test annually with water and reseal only when the test says to.
Can I seal it myself?
You can, and plenty of people do it successfully. The failures we get called to fix are almost always prep failures rather than product failures. The stone was not fully stripped, or it was not fully dry, or the excess was left to flash off and dried as streaks. If you do it yourself, spend most of your time on cleaning and drying.
