A Banded Calcite Formed in Caves, Not a Kitchen Stone
Onyx is neither metamorphic like marble nor igneous like granite. It is a chemical sedimentary stone, calcite precipitated slowly out of mineral-rich water in caves and around springs, building up in fine layers. Those layers are the banding, and because they formed one at a time from flowing water they run in ribbons and swirls no other stone produces.
The same slow formation is why onyx is translucent. The crystal structure passes light instead of stopping it, which is the reason anyone specifies this material.
It is also calcite, chemically the same family as marble, so it is soft and it reacts to acid. Combine that with a layered structure that wants to separate along its bands, and you have a stone that is spectacular and genuinely fragile. We install onyx often, in specific places, on purpose.
Backlighting: The Reason Anyone Chooses Onyx
Light a piece of onyx from behind and the stone stops being a surface and becomes a light source. The banding glows and detail invisible in reflected light comes forward. Amber, honey, green and pink onyx all behave differently under transmission than under a ceiling fixture, which is why we insist on a lit sample first.
How the Assembly Actually Works
A backlit top is not just a slab on a cabinet. The stone is taken down to a thin section so light passes evenly, then laminated to a clear substrate for strength. Behind it goes an even LED panel, not strips, because strips produce hot spots the translucency will happily broadcast. The box needs ventilation and a driver somebody can reach in five years. The apron is where the craft shows: a mitered build-up wraps the panel and conceals the box, so the piece reads as a solid slab of glowing stone. Mesh Backing, Resin Reinforcement and Handling Fragile Slabs
Most onyx arrives at the yard already reinforced. Fiberglass mesh is bonded to the back with epoxy resin at the plant, and many slabs have voids filled with clear resin before polishing. That is standard practice rather than a cover-up, and it is the only reason a large onyx slab survives shipping.
Handling it still differs from granite. Slabs get carried on a full-length rig rather than a two-point suction lift and stay crated on site as late as possible. We do not lean an onyx slab against a wall, and we do not walk it up a stair carry without planning the turn first. Breakage is not recoverable here, because the next slab in the bundle will not match the one you tagged.

Bar Tops, Powder Rooms and Feature Walls
Onyx belongs where it will be looked at rather than worked on. Three placements consistently succeed: a bar or lounge top, a powder room vanity, and a backlit feature wall.
A powder room is close to perfect. It sees guests, not cooking. No citrus, no cast iron, no knife. The vanity is small enough that one slab covers it, and the room is dark enough that backlighting reads dramatically. Why We Will Not Put Onyx Behind Your Range
This is the part of the conversation that costs us jobs and we have it anyway. Onyx is a soft calcite with pre-existing filled fissures, and a kitchen puts every one of its weaknesses under load at once.
Acid from tomato, wine, citrus and vinegar dulls the polish on contact. Cooking oil migrates in and darkens the stone, which shows badly on a translucent material. Knives scar it. A sink or cooktop opening removes support right where the banding wants to separate, and a hot pan on a stone with filled voids invites a crack along a resin line.
If you want the drama of onyx in a kitchen, we will build a backlit panel on a wall or an island end where nobody works, and put a real working surface where the cooking happens. Sourcing and Lead Times on Onyx Slabs
Onyx does not sit in local inventory the way granite and quartz do. Yards carry a small rotating selection, blocks are limited, and a specific color or a matched bundle often has to come from a distributor’s holdings elsewhere or be reserved when it lands.
Plan for that. Book-matched pairs get reserved as a group, and thin sectioning adds shop time after the slab arrives. Can onyx be used in a kitchen?
As a feature, yes. As a working surface, we advise against it. Onyx is a soft calcite that etches from citrus, wine and vinegar, absorbs cooking oil, scars from knives and is prone to separating along its banding at cutouts. A backlit island end panel gives you the drama with none of the risk.
Is backlit onyx expensive to install?
It is more involved than a standard countertop, because the stone is thin-sectioned, laminated to a substrate and built into a serviceable light box. What moves the number is panel size, slab sourcing, edge detail and how the lighting is integrated. We quote it during a free in-home estimate.
How fragile is onyx?
Fragile enough that most slabs ship with fiberglass mesh and epoxy resin bonded to the back and natural voids filled before polishing. It needs full-length support when carried, careful rigging on stairs, and a fabricator who plans the cut around the banding. Once properly supported, it is stable.
Does onyx stain?
Yes, and it shows more than on other stones because the material is translucent, so an oil mark reads through the thickness rather than sitting on the surface. Sealing helps against absorption but does nothing about etching, which is acid attacking the calcite itself.
Where does onyx work best?
Powder room vanities, backlit feature walls, fireplace faces, island end panels and home bar tops in households that use coasters. The common thread is low physical contact and high visibility. Anywhere someone cooks, cuts or sets down a hot pan is the wrong place for it.
