Metamorphosed Sandstone, At Least 80 Percent Quartz by Volume

Quartzite begins as pure quartz sandstone. Heat and pressure fuse the sand grains until the boundaries between them vanish and the rock becomes an interlocking mosaic of quartz crystals. To qualify geologically it must be at least 80 percent quartz by volume, and orthoquartzite often runs as high as 99 percent silica.

That interlocking structure is what you are buying. There is no soft mineral phase to wear preferentially and no carbonate to react with acid. Quartzite is very hard and very resistant to chemical weathering, which on a counter means a stone that ignores lemon juice, vinegar and wine in a way marble never will.

Looks Like Marble, Behaves Closer to Granite

This is why quartzite has taken the high end of the Austin market. A slab can present with soft grey veining on a white or cream ground that reads at a glance like Calacatta, then perform like a hard igneous rock. For clients who fell for a marble kitchen photograph and then read about etching, quartzite is usually the resolution.

It is not a copy, though. Quartzite has a crystalline, sugary sparkle in raking light that marble lacks. We put a quartzite slab, a {{LINK:material:marble}} slab and a {{LINK:material:granite}} slab side by side in the yard, because the differences are obvious in person and invisible in a photograph.

Conchoidal Fracture and What It Means for Fabrication

Here is the property that separates quartzite from every other stone on our saw. In sandstone, a break travels around the grains. In quartzite the grains are fused into the matrix, so a break travels straight through them, giving an irregular or conchoidal fracture, the same curved shell-like break you see in flint or glass.

Practically, quartzite does not chip in a small forgiving way. When it goes it takes a curved flake, usually at a cutout corner where a fabricator forced the cut. It also dulls diamond tooling fast, so cutting speeds come down and a job a granite shop runs in a morning takes considerably longer.

How We Handle It

Slow feed rates, fresh tooling, generous radius at inside corners rather than a tight square, and rodding under sink and cooktop cutouts. Every cut is wet. That matters for the finish and for the crew, because cutting, grinding, sanding, drilling and polishing quartzite releases respirable crystalline silica, a recognized human carcinogen. Soft Quartzite and Dolomitic Marble Sold Under the Same Name

This is the most important thing on this page. A large share of the material sold in the United States as quartzite is not quartzite. It is dolomite or dolomitic marble, a calcium magnesium carbonate that looks similar and takes a similar polish.

The distinction is not academic. Dolomite is a carbonate, so it etches when acid touches it, and it is meaningfully softer. A homeowner sold a hard, acid-proof surface who got a carbonate instead finds out the first time somebody sets a cut lime down. The yard is often not being dishonest, it just repeats what the importer put on the bundle tag. We are not against dolomite at all and we fabricate plenty of it as {{LINK:material:dolomite}}. We are against it being installed under the wrong expectations.

Acid Testing a Slab Before You Commit

The test is simple and we run it in the yard while you watch. Find an inconspicuous spot, the back edge of the slab or an offcut, and put a drop of acid on it. Lemon juice works, diluted muriatic acid answers faster. No reaction means silicate behaving like real quartzite. Fizzing or a dull mark means carbonate. A steel blade scratch test backs it up.

Taj Mahal, Macaubas and White Macaubas in Austin Showrooms

Three names come up constantly in the local yards. Taj Mahal is the warm cream and beige stone with soft translucency that has become the default for transitional Austin kitchens, and much of it is genuinely on the harder end, though testing still matters. Macaubas covers a family of Brazilian material with linear grey or gold banding that varies in hardness bundle to bundle. White Macaubas is the cooler end of that family and the one most likely to be dolomitic.

Where Quartzite Is the Wrong Choice

Quartzite is harder to fabricate and harder to modify later, so it is a poor fit for a homeowner expecting a rushed turnaround or planning to swap appliances and recut the top next year. Heavily figured slabs are also difficult to seam invisibly, so a small kitchen with three tight runs can end up with joints that never disappear. And if you want a flawless repeatable white across three slabs, no natural stone will do it: engineered {{LINK:material:quartz}} will. Quartzite Countertop Questions From Austin Homeowners

Is quartzite the same as quartz?

No, and the names cause endless confusion. Quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock quarried in slabs, at least 80 percent quartz by volume, with unique veining in every piece. Engineered quartz is manufactured, roughly 90 percent crushed quartz bound in polyester resin. One is geology, the other is a recipe.

Does quartzite etch?

True quartzite does not, because it is a silicate with no carbonate to react with acid. If a slab sold as quartzite dulls under lemon juice, it is dolomite or dolomitic marble instead. That is why we run an acid test before fabrication, and why we want you standing there for it.

Is quartzite harder than granite?

Generally yes at the surface. Granite runs 20 to 60 percent quartz by volume with softer feldspar and mica making up the rest, while quartzite is at least 80 percent quartz throughout. Granite still wins at edges and corners, because quartzite fractures conchoidally and takes a curved flake.

Why is quartzite more expensive to fabricate?

Because it destroys tooling. The stone dulls diamond blades and polishing pads quickly, cutting speeds have to drop, and inside corners need generous radii and rodding to avoid conchoidal fracture. Does quartzite need sealing?

Most slabs benefit from it. Quartzite is dense but not non-porous, and light stone next to a sink shows an oil mark quickly. Modern impregnating sealers have moved the interval out to roughly once every five to ten years. Use the fifteen minute water test rather than a calendar.

How can I tell real quartzite from dolomite?

Acid and a blade. Put a drop of lemon juice or dilute muriatic acid on the back edge and wait a few minutes: true quartzite does nothing, dolomite dulls or fizzes. Then try to scratch the back with a steel knife. Do both tests on the actual slab, not a sample.
